Lyrics:

  • Broken Why are some people irresistibly attracted to that person who causes the most pain? Walking the thin line between fear and love for three minutes and twenty-three seconds. Are you in love with the mask or with the man behind the mask?
  • A Picture of You Love never changes. People change. People can change a lot. A picture paints a thousand words and pictures can lie. Inspired by this headshot my parents used to keep of me from college. Clean cut. Sweet. TOTALLY not me.
  • I'm All About You I was exploring the idea of ecstasy, both religious and sexual. Abandoning ourselves is so attractive to a lot of people, whether surrendering to Love, or God, or the love of God, or the God of Love. We search for that experience that takes us away from the small lives we live and transforms us, burning us up in the heat of an ecstatic, miraculous, mind-blowing experience.
  • And the Band Played On A nod to 1981 and the AIDS crisis, that nobody seems to remember is still ongoing.
  • Spy in the House of Love The melody of the repeated section at the end "I'm a Spy In the House of Love" actually came to me in a dream. Madonna was singing it. All of a sudden I thought, "Madonna couldn't sing that interval in tune." And I woke up. The title is from a book by Anais Nin.
  • 500 Arms Used to be a ho'. (But no mo'.) Love is Shiva with Five Hundred Arms.
  • There is a Stone When love dies, it leaves a fossil inside us for some future lover/paleontologist to extract.
  • Chemistry I used to think I was nothing. Worse than nothing. I thought I would kill myself before I turned 21. A lot of kids do, but thanks to 150 mg of Effexor, I don’t want to kill myself anymore. Or not so often. So the drug works for me and keeps the knife in the drawer where it will behave. My question is: Have I now become the person I would have been if depression hadn't been holding me back? Or am I really still that depressed Doug that I used to be, but the drug masks the scorching pain I would be feeling? ... Reality only exists in the chemistry of the beholder.
  • The Voice The 4 a.m. voice whispers in your ear, questioning every choice you’ve made and replaying all your failures in an endless loop. Am I the only one that hears it? When you need every ounce of strength just to take another step, there it is, buzzing in your ears and telling you that you’ve gone too far. Maybe yours sounds like your grade school PE teacher, or your mother, or your ex-lover, or your own perfectionism, or your boss, or your priest... But you should know: the voice lies.
  • Hey, Elizabeth She calls and wakes you from your sound sleep. And that’s okay. Friends can do that.
